Let us know you submitted your intake form

Schedule a 20-30 minute intake session with us

We do this in person at our Eureka or Fortuna offices or online over Zoom

Step 4:
We often match you with a tutor within a few weeks of intake and assessment. Sometimes we need more time, and we will let you know.
You and your tutor will decide the best time and place for your studies, and discuss your most important goals, which your tutor has volunteered to help you achieve.
Your privacy and safety are important to us. Humboldt Literacy Project believes literacy is for everyone, and we’re committed to serving all who seek our support. As a program of the Humboldt County Library and California State Library, we follow county and state legal procedures protecting the privacy of our clients and volunteers. Client and volunteer records are confidential in accordance with library privacy policies. Some anonymous demographic data is shared by HLP with the Library so they can understand our program, but your personal data is for HLP staff and volunteers only. Humboldt Literacy Project connects adults 18+ who wish to improve their reading and writing with adult volunteer tutors for free, confidential, one-on-one English language tutoring.
What this means is we pair our volunteer “Tutors” with “Learners” (you) to help the learners to read and write, learn English, and achieve personal goals.
We work with all kinds of people:

Those with basic literacy skills

Some aiming to improve high school or college-level learning

Others focused on learning English as a second language for broader goals.
Our Programs:

Basic Literacy

Reading and writing for native English speakers who want to improve their skills

Family Literacy

Encouraging families and households to share the fun and challenge of reading, writing, and playing together at educational events we call “Family Literacy Parties.”

We help non-native speakers improve their English.

Humboldt County Correctional Facilities

Assisting incarcerated individuals to enhance skills and prospects, both during confinement and after re-entry

Most of our tutoring pairs meet for about 60-90 minutes, one or two times per week, at a time and location they have chosen together, studying with materials supplied by HLP.
We cannot guarantee a match for everyone, but we try. Some of our matches have been working together for several years!
Learners must have the ability to maintain their own schedule, transportation, and communications in order to work with an HLP tutor.
