Have Fun!

Family Literacy Parties

We love to have fun here at HLP! Starting with our FREE Family Literacy Parties. These events are held periodically throughout the year at local library branches. We have been working hard to get these events to more remote library branches like Willow Creek, Hoopa, and Rio Dell. Family Literacy Parties consist of local entertainment; story telling, dance, music, puppetry, magic, and movement, often paired with crafts for the littles, and free books at the end provided by us. They are usually an hour long with the express purpose of encouraging family literacy through play and creativity. Keep an eye out on our social media, posters, and announcements for the next one near you!

Sean's Shadows Presents: The Magic Measuring Cup Shadow Puppet Show
Humboldt Literacy Project and Humboldt County Library invite families to a Family Literacy Party tour featuring The Magic Measuring Cup by Sean’s Shadows. Artist, musician, and storyteller Sean Powers presents tales of folklore and fantasy using handcrafted shadow puppets and musical instruments from around the world. This is a free event for children and the adults who love them! Attendees get to choose their own free book to keep. We are exploring how this goes and will be developing it further as we get feedback. Our next book is Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder and our next meeting is January 10, 2026 at the HLP office in Eureka from 11:00-12:30.

It's the Great Humboldt Trivia Challenge!

Each Spring, we give you a chance at sweet, sweet glory and being the envy of your know-it-all peers!

The Great Humboldt Trivia Challenge is Humboldt County's premier battle of wits. It's the most fun you can have combating a serious problem... illiteracy! And it's a Humboldt County tradition.

Did we mention dinner is included? And a no-host bar.

Teams that do not know it all can submit their funny-but-incorrect answers to the Humor Judge for special humor prizes. And spectators can bid a dollar if they think they know the answers.

And all funds raised directly support our programs in Adult Literacy, Family Literacy, and ESL. Leave your smart phone at home and create your own team. Stay tuned for updates, and we'll see you there in 2026!

Call 707-445-3655 for more information.

Do you love-love trivia? Submit your favorite tricky question here, and maybe we'll use it in tournament!
